Mason House Inn & Caboose Cottage
21982 Hawk Drive
Bentonsport, IA 52565

Chuck and Joy Hanson invite you to stay in their charming 167 year old Mason House Inn Bed & Breakfast, located in historic Bentonsport, Iowa. This antique hotel was built in 1846 by Mormon craftsmen coming from Nauvoo, Illinois, as a hotel for the steamboat travelers. It has been used as a hospital three different times, and was also a station on the Underground Railroad. Nestled on the banks of the beautiful Des Moines River, Bentonsport is one of the Villages of Van Buren County that were among Southeast Iowa's very first settlements. Our Caboose Cottage is in a real 1952 railroad caboose from the Roscoe, Snyder & Pacific Railway line from Texas. It features a queen-size bed, satellite TV with DVD player, free wireless internet access, a dining area, full kitchen and private bathroom with shower. Breakfast is served in the main house. A great, fun place to stay for train enthusiasts of all ages.

MAKE IT AN HISTORIC STAY is a human-curated, invitation only presentation of select historic lodging accommodations, including bed & breakfasts, inns, hotels and lodges in the United States.

Historic lodging facilities (Stays) are demonstrably significant to world history with respect to their architecture, engineering, archeology or culture, as well as their location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling or association.

Historic bed & breakfasts, inns, hotels and lodges offer travelers a truly unique and memorable lodging experience.

They provide visitors a genuine opportunity to connect with the past, while enjoying restful lodging, excellent cuisine, gracious hospitality and more.

Sadly, countless historically significant structures have been (and continue to be) lost forever.

Many of those that endure, do so largely because of the vision, passion and dedication of devoted and enterprising proprietors, companies and others, who (usually after great effort and expense) offer them as living, interactive lodging facilities reflecting the rich historical fabric within which they are woven.
