Old houses tell stories and this stunning second empire Victorian mansion has a wealth to share. Built in 1874 by Captain John McGilvery, a member of one of Searsport, Maine's most prominent shipbuilding families, its rich history is complete with an intriguing cast of characters. The Inn was a garrison for army officers during WW II and later the retreat of impressionist painter Waldo Peirce. In 1983, the Inn was recognized as a part of the historical and cultural heritage of our nation and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The main house contains thirteen rooms, all with 12 ft. ceilings. There are 5 fireplaces of various designs, original pumpkin pine floors and exquisite plaster ceiling medallions. The Inn is surrounded by 2 acres of gracious, park-like grounds with ocean views. To the delight of our guests, our property has been visited by moose, deer and occasional fox.
Captain A.V. Nickels Inn offers luxury accommodations in an historic setting. The Inn, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1874 by Captain Nickels as a gift to his bride. It is a breathtaking building sitting on 3 meandering acres directly on the island-studded Penobscot Bay half way between the beautiful towns of Camden and Bar Harbor. The Inn is often cited as one off the most photographed inns on the Maine coast. To "create a memory" for each guest, they are treated to a level of luxury and attention to detail usually only seen in exclusive small hotels or inns in Europe. All rooms are furnished with European and American antiques, art, china and decorative touches creating the sophisticated air of a fine country home. Roaring fires on cool evenings, wicker on the lovely front porch, and lawn furniture by the water adds ambiance that invites guests to relax and enjoy the beautiful views.
HistoricStay.com Has Launched!
HistoricStay.com is a human-curated, invitation only
presentation of select, distinctly historic lodging accommodations,
including bed & breakfasts, inns, hotels and lodges worldwide.
Historic lodging facilities (Stays) are demonstrably
significant to world history with respect to their architecture,
engineering, archeology or culture, as well as their location,
design, materials, workmanship, feeling or association.
Historic bed & breakfasts, inns, hotels and lodges offer
travelers a truly unique and memorable lodging experience.
They provide visitors a genuine opportunity to
connect with the past, while enjoying restful lodging,
excellent cuisine, gracious hospitality and more.
Sadly, countless historically significant structures
have been (and continue to be) lost forever.
Many of those that endure, do so largely because of the
vision, passion and dedication of devoted and enterprising
proprietors, companies and others, who (usually after great effort
and expense) offer them as living, interactive lodging facilities
reflecting the rich historical fabric within which they are woven.
